Synthtc is an independent creative-technology and VFX practice by James Bettney, shaping quiet, exacting systems for film, brands, and cultural work. The principle is clear: the picture comes first; the workflow is engineered to serve it. The best work leaves no trace.
Fifteen years inside global campaigns and long-form film inform a production-literate approach: build pipelines that collaborate with real teams, integrate proven craft with model-assisted methods, and hold up at scale. When AI helps, it’s applied surgically—clear inputs, measurable outputs, no artefacts.
Alongside production, the practice supports AI strategy and implementation for creative organisations: where to use models, how to evaluate them, and how to keep a human in the loop. Research threads cover model behaviour (e.g., collapse/coverage), colour and perception, and practical ethics. Notes from the lab are published as concise write-ups and small, reusable tools.
Selective by design, collaborating when the brief is sharp and the impact is real. Based in Portugal; working across the EU and internationally in the US & UK.
